Original Finnish Pavilion 1900 (Paris)

About the IRIS ROOM, PARIS WORLD EXPOSITION 1900

The Russian Grand Duchy of Finland received permission to set up its own pavilion at the Paris World Exposition in 1900.The pavilion showcased the nation’s achievements in arts, science, culture and business. Under the leadership of the chief commissioner of the Finnish pavilion, painter Albert Edelfelt (1854–1905), the best artists of the time were recruited to design and build the pavilion.

Akseli Gallen-Kallela’s contribution was particularly visible in the decoration of the interior. On the vaulted ceilings of the entrance hall he painted murals on themes from the Kalevala, as well as ornamentation. Moreover, the artist’s friend Louis Sparre (1863–1964), who managed a ceramics factory named Iris in Porvoo, asked Gallen-Kallela to design a showroom for the factory in the pavilion.

Gallen-Kallela’s Iris Room was a perfectly furnished space which resembled the living room of an ordinary home. Apart from the furniture, Gallen-Kallela designed the textiles and details, down to the fittings of the curtain rods and the doors. Ceramics from the Iris factory were placed on shelves, tables and the mantelpiece as part of the décor. The textiles in the room were made by the Friends of Finnish Handicraft. The design of the furniture and textiles in the Iris Room echoed the design idiom in Gallen-Kallela’s wilderness home and studio, Kalela.

Gallen-Kallela’s furniture and textile designs were executed in a modern and stylised idiom whose inspiration came from Finnish nature. As a result, the room appeared fresh and original. A textile frieze with a grouse motif ran around the walls. Cascading down from the wall over a bench and onto the floor, the Liekki (‘Flame’) wall rug (ryijy) was an example of Finnish textile traditions, modernised by abstracting a motif from nature.

After the exhibition, the interior of the Iris Room was dispersed: some of it stayed in Paris and two chairs were taken to Hamburg, where they remain to this day in the collections of the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe. The original grouse frieze is deposited in the Finnish Design Museum. Liekki remains a popular rug pattern available from the Friends of Finnish Handicraft. Only a few black-and-white photographs

"Kamba zaka" is a project by Laafi (http://www.laafi.com/), directed by the catalan architect Albert Faus and developed with school teachers of Koudougou.

The fisrt workshop by "Kamba zaka" started on August 13, 2011 with 70 children of Koudougou. The workshop will end before september.

"WHAT IS ASHEVILLE? was a week of play and experimentation in the streets of Asheville using Cell phones, GPS, text messaging and mission-driven exploration. Middle schoolers from various neighborhoods of Asheville engaged their city as Living Game collecting obstacles and opportunities. Their findings were be compiled daily into a Living Gameboard, an interactive collective journal were they dynamically organized and reorganized their collected information through the compositions of words, sound and imagery as a way to understand their city holistically. This lead to visions by our youth for our city, and a celebration on Earth Day!."

Resumen de nuestra intervención del 25 de enero de 2011.

L´associació QUÈ ÉS A? està formada per artistes i arquitectes que enforteixen l´educació de les arts a Catalunya i arreu del món. Treballem i parlem des del coneixement i la pràctica diaria de l´art.

Veiem dues prioritats que el PECB pot defensar:

1- Augmentar la confiança de la societat en el seu sistema educatiu.

L´educació és com la salut... pots pendre´t una aspirina, però si no vols curar-te no et curas. La societat catalana no creu en ferm en el seu sistema educatiu.

2- Millorar l´educació de les arts per a infants i joves.

L´educació de les arts s´ha de pensar i treballar a llarg termini. Hem d´imaginar Catalunya 2050... on tots els infants i joves estudien cada dia arts a les escoles, augmentant la seva percepció del món i donant forma a la seva pròpia veu.

A Catalunya 2050 hi han escoles públiques de les arts per a infants i joves a totes les comarques. Tot infant que vol, al sortir de l´escola normal va a l´escola pública de les arts i estudia pintura, escultura, dansa, música, teatre, fotografia, cinema, arquitectura, etc... amb bons programes i mestres especialistes.

L´infant de Catalunya 2050 pot estudiar art tan fàcilment com en 2011 podia practicar futbol, basket, handbol, judo... A Catalunya 1900 poca gent practicava esports... en 2100 tothom practica l´art i expressa millor els seus sentiments i emocions.

Tota societat decideix què vol ser, i es construeix a si mateixa amb fets.

La asociación ¿QUÉ ES A? está formada por artistas y arquitectos que fortalecen la educación de las artes en Catalunya y otros lugares del mundo. Trabajamos y hablamos desde el conocimiento y la práctica diaria del arte.

Vemos dos prioridades que el PECB puede defender:

1-Aumentar la confianza de la sociedad en su sistema educativo.

La educación es como la salud… puedes tomarte una aspirina, pero si no quieres curarte no te curas. La sociedad catalana no cree con firmeza en su sistema educativo.

2-Mejorar la educación de las artes para niños y jóvenes.

La educación de las artes se ha de pensar y trabajar a largo plazo. Tenemos que imaginar Catalunya 2050… donde todos los niños y jóvenes estudian arte en las escuelas cada día, aumentando su percepción del mundo y dando forma a su propia voz.

En Catalunya 2050 hay escuelas públicas de las artes para niños y jóvenes en todas las comarcas. Todo niño que quiere, al salir de la escuela normal va a la escuela pública de las artes y estudia pintura, escultura, danza, música, teatro, fotografía, cine, arquitectura, etc… con buenos programas y maestros especialistas.

El niño de Catalunya 2050 puede estudiar arte tan fácilmente como en 2011 podía practicar fútbol, básquet, balonmano, judo… En Catalunya 1900 poca gente practicaba deportes… en 2100 todos practican arte y expresan mejor sus sentimientos y emociones.

Toda sociedad decide qué quiere ser, y se construye a sí misma con hechos.

Una jornada con Proxecto Terra

El 27 de noviembre se celebró la jornada de trabajo del Proxecto Terra para preparar el contenido para niños de 3 a 6 años. Nos invitaron a participar. Pilar Cós se centró en "casa-trayecto-escuela" y Jorge Raedó explicó nuestra trayectoria, centrándose en los talleres con niños de 3-6 años. Taller "El retrato de Lonjer"con 20 niñ@s de 5 a 11 años. Durante cinco mañanas estudiaron el cuerpo humano, el espacio interior y exterior, las flores, los personajes imaginarios, la memoria de Trieste... ejercitaron el dibujo, la pintura, la música, el teatro... Taller dirigido por Jorge Raedó con la participación de artistas locales. Concurso de ideas "Qué es Arquitectura?_Estonoesunsolar (nov, dic 2009. Zaragoza)

Zaragoza Vivienda, a través de su programa social Estonoesunsolar, promueve el evento-taller múltiple donde l@s niñ@s hacen propuestas arquitectónicas para adecuar un solar vacío del casco viejo de Zaragoza. 20 arquitect@s de Zaragoza acompañan a l@s alumn@s en el proceso de creación. Un jurado de arquitectos elegirá el proyecto ganador el 12 de noviembre.

El 10 de diciembre fue la fiesta de entrega de los premios por parte de Imaginarium y la inauguración de la expo en el COAA con el material de los chavales. Pronto se inaugurará el solar con el proyecto ganador.

Colaboran el Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos de Aragón (COAA), la Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Zaragoza (ETSAZ USJ), el espacio Joaquín Roncal de la Cai, y la empresa Imaginarium.

Workshop + exhibition at X Bienal Española de Arquitectura y Urbanismo (14, 15, 15 july 2009.Santander)

La Bienal de l@s Niñ@s, es un espacio dentro de la X Bienal para la difusión de la Arquitectura entre los niñ@s. “¿Qué es Arquitectura?” se encarga de su primera edición.
El primer escenario fue un taller para pekes de 5-12 años donde se creó un corto de animación a partir del Teatro del Canal de Juan Navarro Baldeweg, premio de arquitectura de la X Bienal. Con la colaboración de David Ibernia.
El segundo escenario es en la X Bienal en el Palacio Caja Cantabria de Santillana del Mar. Creamos un chill out para niñ@s y grandes donde se presentan los vídeos del proyecto y el corto creado en el taller.

Workshop + exhibition at Beyond Media Festival (6,7,8 july 2009. Firenze)

"¿Qué es Arquitectura?" se presentó en Europa con una sala en el Beyond Media donde mostró los primeros quince vídeos. Realizamos un taller de tres días con niñ@s en colaboración con el Istituto degli Innocenti. Los alumnos trabajaron la perspectiva "brunelleschiana" y construyeron un teatrillo. Ello dio pie a un corto especial que mostramos en la sala de Beyond Media. Contamos con la participación especial de Bet Cantallops y Oleg Ogurtsov.

Taller en la Nau Ivanow, Festival Sagrera (4 juliol 2009, Barcelona)

Por la mañana realizamos un taller infantil donde los pekes prepararon la Nau para la fiesta de la tarde. Por la tarde llegaron los grandes, y en el espacio engalanado por los pekes, hicimos el estreno mundial de la nueva web con los primeros 15 vídeos del proyecto.

Taller en el MACBA + Festival Eme3 (21 març 2009, Barcelona)

Primer taller de "¿Qué es Arquitectura?". Lo realizamos en el Museu d´Art Contemporani de Barcelona, dentro del festival de Arquitectura EME3. Asistieron 20 niñ@s de 5 a 10 años. Bet Cantallops y Oleg Ogursov fueron colaboradores especiales del taller.
